Firing Services

Clay Cartel offers pottery firing services and kiln hire for ceramicists in Marrickville and the Inner West of Sydney.

Looking to fire your ceramic pieces in your local area? We fire most clay bodies, specialising in stoneware and midfire clay and glazes.

To make sure your firing runs smoothly:

  • Drop off your firing during our opening hours, Mon - Sat, 10am-4pm. (Give us a heads up if you can).

  • Complete a firing form when you drop off your work for firing.

  • Ensure your pieces are bone dry before you bring them to us. We will not fire pieces until they are completely dry.

Firing Prices

Your pieces will be weighed when you drop them off and payment is required before firing.

  • Bisque $15 p/kg

  • Glaze $18 p/kg

Hiring a Kiln

Hiring a full kiln will be at Clay Cartel’s discretion, and may not be possible in busy times. We have the following kilns available:

  • Woodrow 120lt

  • Woodrow 225lt

  • Everheat 76lt

Our kiln rules:

  • All kilns are packed and programmed by experienced Clay Cartel staff.

  • We will not fire pieces that we think may damage the kiln or other work in the kiln, but we cannot guarantee that your pieces will not crack, warp or be otherwise damaged during firing.

  • Kiln misfires happen! If a kiln under-fires, we will fire your pieces again free of charge.

  • In the unlikely event your piece is damaged by a staff member, or incorrectly fired, we will not charge for firing and will provide access to our studio and equipment so that you can remake and fire it for free.

  • Kiln delays happen! We may need to move agreed schedules if needed.

  • Concerned about a runny glaze? You need to provide a setter. If your glaze runs onto a kiln shelf, you will be charged a cleaning or shelf replacement fee depending on the extent of the damage.

  • If you advise us incorrectly about the clay or glaze you have used, you will have to pay for any damage caused. For example, if you give us midfire clay or glaze to go into a stoneware firing, it is likely that the clay and glaze will melt onto the kiln shelf and you will be charged a cleaning or shelf replacement fee depending on the extent of the damage.

  • Any glazes you use on your pieces must be thoroughly tested for stability, must not flash, or contain salts.

  • Please don’t get experimental with what you put in your clay or glaze without telling us.

  • We will only fire clay bodies containing BRT if it’s not more than 10%.
